Welcome to Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption’s 18th Annual Run For Their Lives!

Race Options

  • 5K / 10K Run-Walk
  • 15K Challenge Race
  • 1/2 Mile Kids’ Fun Run

Join us Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Kiwanis Park in Sanford for one of CARA’s biggest fundraisers of the year.

Run For Their Lives helps keep our shelter in operation and supports the care of unwanted animals throughout Central North Carolina. Whether you run, walk, participate virtually or simply support the event, you are helping provide food, shelter, medical care and second chances for animals in need.

Race Day Registration: Bib pickup and new registrations begin at 6:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park. There is no advance bib pickup.

The course winds through Historic Sanford and the Greenway, with just enough hills to remind you that your legs made questionable life choices.

Participants may also choose a virtual option, complete their own 5K or 10K route or select the “Sleep For Their Lives” option to support CARA without running.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption, where pets become family.

Join us for a gorgeous 5K that begins in Kiwanis Park, runs through beautiful historic downtown Sanford, and returns to finish in the shade of Kiwanis Park’s trees. If you would like to make this a FUN RUN and not be chip-timed just choose that option when you register! This saves CARA the cost of chip timing.

Prefer to Sleep For Their Lives? If you won’t be able to participate but would still like to support Run For Their Lives! and CARA, simply register under the “Sleep for Their Lives” option and you’ll have the option to have your t-shirt mailed to you. Sweet Dreams!

Remember that dogs, like people, need to prepare for a race.
Leashed and vaccinated dogs only, please!

Prizes and medals awarded for overall winners. Medals awarded to age group winners, as well as first dog across the finish line!
