My story

By Holly

I was once a puppy. When I was young my people loved me, they petted me, they gave me good things to eat. As I grew older I was just another dog in the yard. Sometimes my people forgot to feed me and the stress on my body gave me a skin condition the vet calls demodectic mange (non-contagious). Even though my stomach growled and I began to lose weight I still wagged my tail and greeted people joyfully. Even though my fur began to fall out and my skin became raw, I was still full of hope. And when my people abandoned me on the side of the road, I waited patiently for them to return. They never did.

I took refuge on someones porch and they called animal control to pick me up. For three weeks they called animal control to come get me but they didn't show up (thank goodness!). They finally called CARA and a very nice volunteer named Rhonda couldn't bear the thought of me being outside (a big snowstorm was coming). She rode with another volunteer to retrieve me. I ran to them eagerly, happy someone had come to play. They were shocked at my condition. About half my fur had fallen out and my skin was cracked and bleeding. I was about 10 lbs. underweight (a lot for a dog who should weigh 25 lbs.), my nails never have been trimmed, my ears full of mites. I greeted them joyfully as I still have a great love for people.

I got to go to the vet with Rhonda. I was deemed to be a terrier mix (though I favor a mexican hairless right now) about 1 year old. I am heartworm negative and have started treatments for my skin condition. I also got heartworm prevention, a rabies shot, dewormed, and lots of other icky stuff.

Every animal that comes into the CARA program is here because one or more events occurred  that led to this animal needing not only a home, but a person or family to love and protect them. Each animal has been loved and cared for by a small and determined group of people who want nothing more than to know each animal is safe for the rest of his or her life. Thank you for looking to adopt!
